Why I'm an Author

My love for children has been a constant in my life even as a child. All of my formal education was child-centered, my work in church and ministry has been child-centered and my family relationships have been child-centered.

About me

I began my formal post-secondary education at Howard University. On graduation day, my father asked if I would get a Master degree. I replied, “If the Lord lets me graduate today, I will never go back to school.” Needless to say, I was enrolled in a Master degree at Temple University by January. After receiving my Master degree from Temple I began working in the field of special education. From that point on, all of my professional experiences have been in special education: as a teacher, as a member of a multi-disciplinary evaluation team, and lastly as an administrator.

I am the mother of one son and hours after he was born, I looked into his face and proclaimed, “Now I can be a grandmother.” I do not know where that came from, but I kept it in my heart for twenty-six years. I retired to babysit my first grandchild, Sekou and later my granddaughter, Nnemdi.

I have always loved to read to young people and have read to nieces, nephews, cousins and other young people. Storytime with Aunt Kay was born from that love of reading. Another birth from my love of reading, is the book that I have written, Introducing the Shapes Family, that was written for Sekou as a toddler to teach him his shapes. This book will be the first in a series.

I am a Howard University graduate that has always kept what I was taught close to my heart -- The pride in being an African American and sharing that with my love circle of children. Lastly, I am unapologetically a Christian.
